The Joan Hamburg Show
Today I have a radio interview with Joan and Liz Hamburg of The Joan Hamburg Show. Joan, "New York Radio's First Lady," is known throughout the country for her award-winning business and consumer affairs reporting. I'm looking forward to sharing my personal experience growing Little Pim from the ground up with her audience. Little Pim Press: Wired & Geek Dad
2010 kicked off with an amazing review in Wired.com's Geek Dad channel, by Jenny Williams and Jonathan Liu. Jenny, a homeschooling mom, had this to say about Little Pim Spanish DVDs: "This series is cute, funny and my kids loved it. The teaching was sound, the meanings mostly clear. Small kids will want to watch it over and over."
She ended by saying: "You’ll want to buy the next level of videos, but I don’t think it exists yet!" We're getting there Jenny! Little Pim DVDs 4, 5 & 6 are in the final stages of editing and will be released soon.
Jonathan gave Little Pim Mandarin Chinese DVDs a big thumbs up. He notes, "I watched the Chinese (Mandarin) version of Little Pim with my kids (age three and six) and they both enjoyed it and laughed a lot at the cartoon panda." He also touched on an important issue: "I think reinforcement from parents is very crucial to learning the language..."

The Little Pim Holiday Party!
The Little Pim holiday party was last week. It felt great to celebrate and thank the many people who have worked so hard all year to grow our company - our staff, filmmakers, editors, graphic designer, animators, fulfillment house, website manager, advisors and investors, to name just a few. I feel incredibly lucky that we have so many talented and fun people working with us!
We also used the party as a chance to introduce Little Pim's two new animated friends: Bob the Bobcat and Lola the Elephant!
They were represented by life-sized cut outs and a sneak preview of Little Pim DVD 4. Keep checking the blog for new developments about our soon to be released DVDs 4, 5 and 6.
Wishing all of our Little Pim families a happy and safe holiday season - in all your favorite languages!

Little Pim on Fox 11 Good Day LA
Great news: Good Day LA on Fox 11 News featured Little Pim! Jillian Reynolds, a host for the show, included Little Pim in her Style File segment entitled "Jill's Favorite Baby Gifts." She gushed over Spanish Bop, our flash cards, and of course the DVDs. I'm so happy to help her daughter, Ruby, pick up español. Watch the clip below:
New DVDs and Friends for Little Pim
We are having a blast recording our new Little Pim DVDs in French, Spanish and Chinese. It's great to be back in the recording studio hearing our talented voiceover artists bring Little Pim to life. After three months of editing, we have an amazing video track and dozens of children and babies acting out the new vocabulary. Breaking news: Little Pim has new friends! Bob the Bobcat and Lola the Elephant will make their debut in the new DVDs.
If your kids have been watching DVDs 1, 2, and 3 and are ready to move onto 4, 5, and 6, you won't have to wait much longer! Our newest DVDs explore emotions, counting, and learning about rooms and objects in the home.

The article by Nick Leiber touched on why I created Little Pim, the language teaching legacy I inherited from my father, and Little Pim’s growth trajectory to date.

Meeting Dr. Bialystok
Last weekend I attended a talk at a local Barnes & Noble by Dr. Ellen Bialystok, who was speaking about the cognitive benefits of children being bilingual. She is a Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology at York University in Canada. I have been following her work for a long time and have cited her research on bilingual children on our web site. Dr. Bialytsok walked us through studies she did on groups of monolingual and bilingual kids, comparing their reading, writing and processing skills. Her studies showed that not only did the bilingual children have the same level of vocabulary and ability to read in English as the monolingual kids, but in addition there were many cognitive benefits to learning a second language. The main one is that it is a great workout for the front lobes of the brain, which are in charge of all of our "executive functions". These functions include processing language, critical thinking and other intelligence related skills such as concentration and retention of information. She also shared evidence that showed that even limited exposure to a foreign language can modify how children think and enhance their cognitive skills. In other words, it’s not all or nothing and every bit counts.
After the talk I met Dr. Bialystok and learned that in 1981 she had been awarded the ACTFL-Paul Pimsleur Award for Research in Foreign Language Education; my father's legacy! What a thrill. She is making such an important contribution to this field of study and helping parents like me to feel confident that we are doing the right thing for our children by introducing them to a second language.
